In Florida we are constantly dealing with the issue of school vouchers and also the McKay Scholarship (given to students with learning disabilities). Until the public school system quits being more concerned with teaching kids about social issues and promoting the governments political agendas (ie global warming), we will continue to turn out students who are academic illiterates. My daughter, who has a learning disability, was in 6th grade before anyone in the public school system had the guts to stand up and say, "We can't help her. There is a voucher type program you can apply for." When she was in 5th grade her teacher told her she would never graduate from school or amount to anything (that teacher is now a high school principal). My daughter was reading at a first grade level. Thanks to the teacher at her middle school who told us about the McKay scholarship we were able to put our daughter into Center Academy, a school that deals with kids who have learning disabilities. Within, a year and a half she was reading at her grade level. Just recently she finished her first year of college with a 2.98GPA. We would never have been able to afford CA without the McKay scholarship. More than likely our daughter would have dropped out of school. Her goal now, is to get her degree in education and teach kids who have learning disabilities like she has.
