I am concerned over some of the language in the declaration. The declaration states that the signers wish to uphold a "traditional form" of marriage, however scripture clearly states that polygamy is the most traditional form and this definition is supported many, many times in the Bible. If the signers wish to adhere to scriptural teaching, they must be in support of polygamy. If they are not willing to do this, then the claim that they wish to uphold traditional marriage is a fraud.

What this sounds like is that people like Colson wish to throw out the Bible and have everyone adhere to what he and his followers want instead of what God actually tells us in scripture. This is not a Declaration in support of the Christian faith. This is a Declaration that wishes to replace the Christian faith and no honest Christian should support it.

Observing that the "Manhattan Declaration" has a website (www.manhattandeclaration.org) which includes an opportunity to "sign" the declaration, and seeing that the list of signers has grown to over 190 leaders and over 306,000 others, I wish there was another site where people could show they are against such a proposal. Perhaps such a site might be called Manhattan Declaration Option (or some other name that would pop up on a web search for the "Manhattan Declaration"). People could sign there--those who believe not only in the sanctity of life, the importance of one-man/one-woman marriage, and the high value of religious freedom, but also in the separation of church and state, and the power of God alone to change hearts (without legal pressure) and to control the affairs of nations ( by whatever means he chooses). They could express their commitment to pray and submit to God's leading as their primary means of influence rather than the political arena (which includes civil disobedience). I hope that this kind of declaration could be written for people of many faiths, no merely Christians. It may provide a counter-position for those in politics to consider on behalf of people of all persuasions. It may also provide food for thought for others interested in these issues and hopefully enable a better decision for all.
