Student religious liberty essay contest to focus on universal human rights

April 27, 2018 by ReligiousLiberty.TV

LOS ANGELES, CA – Founders’ First Freedom in cooperation with Liberty Magazine has announced a summer high school and college essay contest complete with cash prizes and the opportunity to be published in print and online.

The first place essay in each category, high school, and college, will win $750 and second place winners in each will win $500.  Winning essays will be published in the print or online versions of Liberty Magazine and runner-ups may be published on the Founders’ First Freedom or ReligiousLiberty.TV web pages. Essay length is at maximum 1,200 words and the due date is September 1, 2018.

Students will be addressing the challenging contest topic, “Is religious liberty a universal human right? Discuss the meaning of this term as it is understood in a culture, country, or intellectual tradition different from your own.”

“The goal is to get students to think about religious liberty topics in a ‘big picture’ way. It isn’t just about protecting their own rights, but rather expanding the application of rights to those who they may actually disagree with on matters of faith,” said Michael Peabody, president of Founders’ First Freedom. “We appreciate our longstanding friendship with Liberty and we are happy to be partnering with them on this new project. If you’re a teacher, a pastor, or a youth group leader, we would encourage you to tell your high school and college students about this great opportunity.”

Founders’ First Freedom, is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicating to promoting liberty of conscience, and operates the ReligiousLiberty.TV website. Founded in 1906, Liberty magazine continues to be the preeminent resource for matters of religious freedom. Published by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Liberty currently maintains a circulation of nearly 200,000.

Statement on the Leak in Dobbs

The leak was intended to disrupt the processing of the decision and we are not going to dignify the leak or the unidentified leaker by analyzing it prematurely. As a constitutional republic we cannot go down that road without doing severe damage to the institution of the Supreme Court where there must be professional courtesy between the justices and their staffs.
