Dobson says Obama has “fruitcake interpretation” of the Constitution and is distorting Bible; still won’t vote for McCain

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – In a soon-to-be-aired episode of his non-profit, tax-exempt radio program “Focus on the Family,” Dr. James Dobson accuses Barack Obama of pandering to the “lowest common demoninator of morality” with his “fruitcake interpretation” of the U.S. Constitution and distortion of the Bible.

“Am I required in a democracy to conform my efforts in the political arena to his bloody notion of what is right with regard to the lives of tiny babies?” Dobson said. “What he’s trying to say here is unless everybody agrees, we have no right to fight for what we believe.”

Focus on the Family has invited both Obama and McCain to visit their campus in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Obama apparently has not responded, and Dobson declined a meeting with McCain in Denver because Dobson wanted to bring McCain down to the FOTF campus so he could have a better idea of what their ministry is all about.

It is hard to guess whom Dobson is going to vote for, since he has said he could not in good conscience vote for McCain and associates Obama’s legal theory with a sugary Christmas confection.

This is not to say that Focus on the Family does not have some excellent resources for helping families and promoting good values in general, but sometimes it crosses a fine line.

  1. James Dobson has worked very hard over the years to acquire religious authority and political power. He has become a major player in the right-wing evangelical movement who has no compunction using his authority to get his fans to fund political causes and exercise their voting powers to support his agendas. But in the end, he’s just a guy with some very strong opinions about the way things should be. If you think he’s smarter, wiser, more spiritual, and more blessed by God, you should know what his theology is that you’re buying into, and more importantly, you should inspect his life and his works to determine if you truly believe he is worthy of such admiration. James Dobson’s ultimate concern may be nothing more than James Dobson and the empire James Dobson is trying to create. Shame on Dobson for deriding Obama for questioning whose Christianity should be followed here in America. Dobson’s presumption that his Christianity should be assumed by all raises my hackles. He acts like he’s the ultimate authority. The Reformation created many types of Protestantism and people need to be respected for what they believe and for what their understanding of God is. Because, the Reformation should also be considered for all the fighting, persecution and bloodshed that occurred over whose religious was the “right” religion. Throwing in a debate about Old Testament texts and New Testament Christian theology has no place in political debate. It just serves to inflame and confuse people. I’m sorry when any politician engages in using a Biblical standard to demonstrate how people should treat each other. God gave us brains, and the lessons for loving conduct should be obvious. We’re not nice, for example, to our enemies because “the Bible tells me so”, but, because it’s the ultimate demonstration of how God has treated the human race and his lesson to us is this is how we have to behave and what kind of humans we have to become. It’s just common decency. Christians aren’t the only nice people in the world, and they are sometimes the worst.

The abortion issue is the one issue upon which any person can count on to create mass insanity, and it has caused several good Christian people to do some very un-Christian behaviors, including murder. My goodness, that’s the first bandwagon I would jump on if I wanted to create a religious empire. You know, if you have no morals or ethics and you wanted to make vast amounts of money you would go into pornography, liquor, tobacco, and weapons. Well the abortion issue functions the same way to garner support and fill those coffers with coin.

So Dobson doesn’t approve of Obama. His objection is probably more of a tax issue than anything else, since Republicans are famous for doing and saying anything to protect themselves from taxes. If Dobson’s motivation happens to be the Dominionists’ view, then he’s the “fruitcake”.
