Full disclosure: I was raised by American missionaries — Francis and Edith Schaeffer — who became leaders within the American Evangelical subculture. When I was in my twenties I was their sidekick. We Schaeffers had a lot to do with the formation of the Religious Right. (Sorry!) In the mid 1980s I escaped my tribe’s literal-minded religion and currently go to a Greek Orthodox Church. I’ve also been one of President elect Obama’s most vocal and prolific — judging by the amount I’ve written — supporters.

Into the all or nothing culture wars, and the all or nothing wars between the so-called New Atheists and religion the election of President elect Obama reintroduces nuance. President elect Obama’s ability to believe in Jesus, yet question, is going to rescue American religion in general and Christianity in particular, from the extremes.Â

To the New Atheists who think that with the resounding defeat of the Religious Right, we are entering a secular age, think again. Obama will block your path. He’ll do it for the same reason he’ll make the Religious Right’s paranoid fantasies about him soon seem shamefully ridiculous. That’s because President elect Obama is that rarest of all rare people: a thoughtful, compassionate and likable statesman who also is a thoughtful, compassionate and likable religious believer.

I just saw your interview on MSNBC and it’s very obvious which way you lean in your politics. I personally do not have a political agenda to the left or right. I would call myself anti-government and in my business I speak to other business owners all over the country everyday and we talk about what is happening to this country. We don’t take political sides we just take the view of common sense. We are not influenced by what the news cable media is spewing because trust me they don’t have as much influence as you give them credit for. It’s like this, the Democrats, the Republicans and the cable news, are all full of it and we know it. As for you to appear on MSNBC which I consider the biggest cry baby of all news shows because for the most part all they want to do is beat up on their competition and anyone else they can find, that gets old real quick. Again they’re all to blame for this mess, take away the political labels and look at what you got it’s the person not the party that made this mess. They all should reprimand for their disgraceful service performance. Unfortunately this is the only way the uneducated middle age male can deal with this problem is to raise hell in their face because our voices are not heard. We are not a political party; we are not lobbyist, we are just people that work hard everyday to make a living and leave it up to you all, that think you are the smart ones and have all the answers. The uneducated, well it wasn’t us that got us in this mess. So if it’s the uneducated that you are saying is the problem, I would think again and wonder have we screwed up so bad that it has forced the uneducated man out of the woodwork and in to a town hall meeting to say what’s on his mind because he is feed up with all this political garbage. You really don’t think this is possible? I can tell this is the real deal we are just sick and tired of the liberals, the government, the politicians, the lobbyist the whole ball of wax. What are doing to our country? What is wrong with you people, where in the hell is your common sense. It appears to me that you all are too smart for yourselves.
