VIDEO: John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. on Religious Liberty

It seems like issues of a Presidential candidate’s religion have always been an issue in elections going back to the 1960s. In this video clip, John F. Kennedy discusses how he believes church and state should relate to each other. It also features a brief clip of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

(Note: This video also contains a political endorsement at the end. The purpose of this post is not to make a political endorsement and this endorsement is incidental to the larger theme of the video.)

  1. I agree with John Kennedy that often the real issues that a candidate would like to talk about, poverty, war, crime, are clouded by issues, such as specific religon, that are brought up and talked about. The times have not changed. We still have commentators talking about insignificant things when they should be concentrating on sharing with us how candidates feel about the issues we are interested in. Yes, religion is important, ethics is important. It colors our judgements as do all of our experiences. This is a good thing. I would rather have someone in politics who believes in doing what is right rather than what is best for him or her.

  3. As religion plays a large role in our society .of course it’s going to be a hot button issue during times of election because a lot of folks relate and judge folks o which religion they are………..unfortunate but true.

  5. Its funny how JFK mentions so many issues that sound like todays problems. Will there ever be a day when we have no problems?
