OPINION: Does the World Need a Global Population Control Agency? (Catholic Online)

FRONT ROYAL, Va. (Catholic Online) – Overpopulation hysteria has real world consequences. One of these is a United Nations population control agency that goes by the name of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).

Started in 1969 following a massive lobbying effort by billionaire John D. Rockefeller III, the UNFPA claims to work to “reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.” In fact, the UNFPA, like its founder, believes that the way to reduce poverty is to reduce the numbers of the poor through sterilization, contraception, and abortion campaigns.

We know.We have conducted repeated investigations of UNFPA operations around the world. We have found that, despite its soothing rhetoric about improving “reproductive health,” and “safe motherhood”-the UNFPA spends a huge chunk of its budget on soporific propaganda–the agency continues to be fixated on the numbers. We have documented its involvement in coercive population control policies in countries like China, Vietnam, Peru, and North Korea, as well as in refugee camps around the world.

Its intimate connection to China’s brutal one-child policy merits special attention. For three long decades, the Chinese government has aborted and sterilized millions of women each year. For three long decades, the UNFPA has provided financial aid, ideological encouragement, and international sanction to these abuses through its offices in Beijing and around the Chinese countryside. This shameless pattern of complicity in some of the worst human rights abuses on the planet is the chief reason why the Bush Administration, for seven years running, has refused to fund the UN agency.

  1. I think that over population is one of the greatest threats to our survival on this planet. The more people we have, the more resources we need to feed, clothe and shelter them. This in turn leads to environmental problems like habitat destruction and global warming. Having said that, I don’t believe that forced abortions or sterilizations are the right way to go about reducing the populations levels. The Catholic Church’s continued refusal to recognize contraception is just as bad as the issues outlined in this article. Obviously there needs to be some middle ground found to resolve this issue.

  3. If we are not going to have bans on abortions then the government has no right to tell us how many children we can or can not have.

  5. I think that we should control how much population that the planet can support. Too many people recklessly have children for the wrong reasons,(religious, receiving goverment benefits, lack of birth control).

  7. Wow. One thing Bush did that I actually agree with, what a shocker. As soon as I read the header of this article, of course the first thing I thought of was China and the horrors we used to hear about babies being left in dumpsters. Who gives other human beings the right to decide how the world population is controlled? I don’t recall voting for anything like that. How disgusting that people actually think it is OK to control the entire world’s breeding habits. I agree that there are people in the world that should, ehem, close their legs and act responsibly, but dumpster babies aren’t the solution.

  9. If stood on each others shoulders the entire population of the world could fit inside of the Grand Canyon. The Bush Administration was absolutely correct and I hope the incoming administration follows their lead. The lie that the planet is over populated should be made available for the masses to see. God said, Go forth and multiply. The problem is not population, the problem is hatred, prejudice and the love of money by corporations that have people suffering from the ‘lack of’. People are selfish and only care about themselves. Everyone, even the entire world was taken aback and horrified (rightfully so), at the three thousand plus killed by terrorists on 9-11, but more than 4500 abortions were performed the same day and everyday in America. On a yearly basis, that is more than the population of some countries. Let’s put things in perspective and care more about the sanctity of life and not only the quality. There is enough food produce in America alone to feed us and those that go hungry worldwide, but some governments won’t even allow us to help. Stupidity prevails.

  11. I would like to know…who gets to decide? Who gets to decide if you have kids? Can you have one kid? Can you have 5 kids? Does someone at this agency get to evaluate you and your spouse and say “You guys don’t have the proper genetic components to produce good children, so sorry, you don’t get any.” Does it matter what color your skin is? Does it matter what religion you are? Or does it just matter what country you are from? People from “China, Vietnam, Peru, and North Korea, as well as in refugee camps around the world” don’t have the same rights as someone from the middle of Kansas? I find that beyond the pale.

There are millions of acres of land in this country alone that farmers are being paid to not farm. There are millions of parks and golf courses in this country, that if there really was a food crisis, farmers could farm. Instead, there is a political crisis that stops the food from being shipped to people who are hungry. It is disingenuous and a flat out lie that we are in a population crisis.
