[dc]T[/dc]he idea that religion makes civilization possible may appear counterintuitive to our Western mind today. We have witnessed a barrage of argument from people like Richard Dawkins and the late Christopher Hitchens that religion is destructive and irrational. Yet, not that long ago, certainly no more than three generations back, our communities instinctively understood that religion was a positive force.
