Settlement ends legal action brought by Dr. Allan Josephson over allegations of viewpoint discrimination.
The University of Louisville has agreed to pay nearly $1.6 million to settle a lawsuit brought by Dr. Allan M. Josephson, a former professor in the university’s Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology. The settlement was announced by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) on April 25, 2025.
According to ADF, Dr. Josephson was demoted after speaking in his personal capacity at a Heritage Foundation event, where he expressed his views on the treatment of children experiencing gender dysphoria. He later filed a lawsuit against university officials alleging they violated his constitutional rights.
The settlement agreement states that the University of Louisville will pay $1,600,000 to resolve the case. The university did not admit wrongdoing. Both parties agreed to dismiss the lawsuit.
ADF attorneys represented Dr. Josephson throughout the case. No further court action is pending following the settlement.
