Senate confirms Gingrich as ambassador to Vatican

Posted on October 17, 2017 by ReligiousLiberty.TV

In a vote of 70-23, the United States Senate approved the nomination of Callista L. Gingrich as the United States Ambassador to the Vatican. Gingrich, the wife of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (m. 2000), is an author, documentary producer, and former congressional aide.

Her husband, Newt Gingrich, was raised as a Lutheran who became Southern Baptist during graduate school and ultimately a Catholic in 2009.  According to the Catholic News Agency (https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/callista-gingrich-confirmed-as-us-ambassador-to-the-vatican-29758 ) , Newt converted to Catholicism because of “Callista’s witness as a Catholic” and that he had attended Mass at the National Shrine where she sang in the choir. Newt said she “created an environment where I could gradually think and evolve on the issue of faith.”

In 2010, the couple’s film company, Gingrich Productions (http://www.gingrichproductions.com), made a documentary about Pope John Paul II.

As the U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, Gingrich will need to support the interests of the United States on many issues, including those where U.S. policy differs from the interests of the Vatican including immigration and international affairs among others.
